Up
ahead of her, in one of the offices, sat a scruffy, unshaven man swinging
back and forth on his chair. A brown, dusty hat covered his tired eyes,
but nothing could disguise the stale smell of sweat that he emitted every
time he moved. "Still waiting for the furniture then?" remarked
the cleaner as she passed by slowly with her floor polisher. The man jerked
his thumb towards a large, steel container behind him. "Yep,"
he replied, in his Australian drawl, "and we're keeping all the computer
stuff in that box till it arrives." "I bet it's pretty valuable
stuff, too," observed the cleaner. "More than you know,"
he replied, absentmindedly. The cleaner suddenly lost all interest in
the floor, and the polisher stopped revolving. The man's throwaway remark
had aroused her interest and she fixed her attention on the container.
The sweaty man was now obviously annoyed by her presence, but she was
determined to try and satisfy her curiousity.
